Our school, South-North Love School, is preparing the unification generation on the Korean Peninsula by teaching North Korean resettler students to be disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our Goal:
1. Through worship, prayer, discipleship training, reading, music, art and physical education classes, our young North Korean defectors can be healed, restored and they can grow and be mature spiritually.
2. We help them to pass the qualification exam for college and to have scholastic ability which is needed to keep up with its curriculum after their college admission.

Our Educational Foundation “South-North Love Network”
South-North Love Network is a composite juridical person which belongs to Ministry of National Unification in South Korea. It is a designated tax-reduced contribution organization by Ministry of Strategy and Finance as well. It helps to settle successfully in South Korea all of the North Korean defectors including young ones. Especially it focuses on the restoration of North Korean defectors’ families and the education for next generation of North Korean defectors.

People Who Leads Our School
Chairman of the board of South-North Love Network is Ahn Insup, a professor at Chongshin University, Seoul, South Korea, who majored in the history of church. The founder of South-North Love School is Lee Phillip (sungkyu), who is a senior pastor of Yulbangsam (Spring of All Nations) Church 80% of whose congregation are North Korean defectors including him. The principal of South-North Love School is Shim Yangsup, who is a former journalist at Chosun Daily News which is the largest paper in South Korea and is in charge of fundraising for our school as well.

북한의 교육 붕괴와 탈북과정의 말할 수 없는 고난으로 인하여 학력공백이 큰 10대 후반부터 20대 초반까지의 탈북청소년들을 기독교 신앙 안에서 가르치는 대안학교입니다. 날마다 큐티와 예배로 수업을 시작하고 일대일 양육을 비롯한 제자훈련, 기도회, 성경과목 수업을 통해 학생들을 예수 그리스도의 제자로 양육합니다. 중졸, 고졸 검정고시 대비와 대입 준비 외에도 음악, 미술, 체육, 독서, 현장학습을 통해 전익격적인 치유와 회복 그리고 성장을 도모합니다. 통일을 향한 다음 세대 주역을 길러내는 것이 교육의 목표입니다. 그리스도 예수를 믿는 신앙 안에서 통일을 준비하는 학교 "남북사랑학교"를 응원해 주십시오.

Through South-North Love School, we prepare for reunification of Korea. We teach our young North Korean defectors to grow intellectually and spiritually in Christ. They, who are late teens or early twenties, have not received educational benefits sufficiently because the education system in North Korea have almost totally collapsed since late 1990s. Though some of them had stayed in China for several years before entering South Korea, there had been no chance for them to learn properly as well. We aim to make them disciples of Jesus Christ through daily devotion and worship, discipleship training, praying together and Bible class. Besides helping them to pass the qualification exam for college and to have scholastic ability which is needed to keep up with its curriculum after their college admission, we pursue them being recovered from the trauma of escaping North Korea and surviving severe persecution in China and we help them to develop their whole personalities through music, art, physical education, reading and field studies. Our ultimate goal of education is fostering next generation leaders for reunification of Korea on the basis of Christian world view. Noth Korean resettler students at our school, South-North Love School, spend too many hours a day in making money, or various kinds of part-time jobs, to commit themselves to their duties, that is, study of school subjects. For example, Youngmin who is seen on the above image offers chauffeur services to drunken persons all night long. So he is sleepy while staying at school during the day. We have five students like Youngmin. They are supposed to be given 200 U.S. dollars per month as scholarship so that they may save some time to concentrate on schoolworks.

탈북청소년 장학금 모금
남북사랑학교에 재학 중인 많은 탈북청소년들은 이런저런 아르바이트를 하는 데에 너무 많은 시간을 보내느라 공부에 집중하지 못합니다. 생활비와 학비를 벌기 위해, 그리고 북한에 남은 가족들에게 송금하기 위해 돈을 법니다. 예를 들면 위의 사진에 나오는 영민이는 밤새 대리운전 아르바이트를 하고 낮에는 학교에 와서 꾸벅꾸벅 좁니다. 대리운전을 원하는 취객들을 찾아 밤새 돌아다니다 보면 매일 밤 20킬로미터를 걷는다고 합니다. 영민이처럼 지나친 아르바이트로 학업에 집중하지 못하는 학생이 다섯 명 있습니다. 이들에게 월 20만원 이상의 장학금을 지급함으로써 아르바이트를 줄이고 학업에 좀 더 집중하게 하려고 합니다.

북한에서는 영어를 배우지 못했어요

“I could not learn English in North Korea”

명옥이는 북한의 량강도 혜산 출신입니다. 북한에서는 학교를 못 다녔습니다. 명목이가 열일곱 살이던 2008년부터는 북한에서도 학교에서 영어를 가르치기 시작했지만 명옥이는 학교를 다닌 적이 없기 때문에 북한에서는 영어를 배우지 못했습니다. 북한을 떠나 중국에 몇 해 사는 동안에도 고된 시집살이를 하느라 영어를 배울 겨를이 없었습니다. 다섯 살짜리 아들 하나를 둔 스물일곱 살 "엄마 학생" 명옥이는 2019년 4월 13일 (토) 치러진 검정고시에서 초졸 검정고시에 합격한 후 현재 탈북청소년 대안학교인 남북사랑학교에서 중졸 검정고시를 준비 중입니다. 명옥이가 제일 잘 배우고 싶은 과목은 영어입니다. 한국에서는 외래어를 너무 많이 사용하기 때문에 영어를 모르고는 살 수가 없기 때문입니다. 아르바이트를 하고 싶은 마음이 굴뚝같지만 명옥이는 공부에 집중하기 위해 오늘도 허리띠를 졸라맵니다.

Myung Ok is from North Korea's Ryanggang Province Hyesan. When she turned seventeen in 2008, North Korea began teaching English to its students in schools. Unfortunately, Myung Ok could not go to school in North Korea and didn’t learn any English. Even while she was living in China for some time she could not learn English because her Chinese in-laws made her work. A “mother student” with a five year old son, Myung Ok passed Korea’s primary school examination on April 13, 2019 and is now studying for the middle school examination at the South-North Love School, a school for North Korean defectors. Myung Ok is determined to learn English because there are many foreign words borrowed in the South Korean language. She wants to work part-time but is equally adamant about her studies.

 

명옥이를 가르치는 자원봉사자 선생님께 교통비라도 드리려면...

“For those interested in becoming a volunteer”

남북사랑학교에는 명옥이 외에도 영미, 현옥이 같은 엄마 학생들이 세 명이나 재학 중입니다. 이들의 한결같은 소원은 영어를 잘 배우는 겁니다. 중졸, 고졸 검정고시에 합격하기 위해서도 영어가 중요하고, 대학 들어가서 학업을 따라가기 위해서도 영어가 중요합니다. 온통 영어 투성이인 생활용품 하나를 제대로 사용하기 위해서도 영어를 모르고는 안 됩니다. 이들에게 영어를 가르치는 자원봉사 선생님들이 남북사랑학교에는 다섯 분이 계십니다. 이분들에게 한 달에 10만원씩 교통비라도 드리고 싶습니다. 그리고 영어 듣기와 말하기 교육을 위해서는 노트북 컴퓨터도 구입해야 합니다. 그밖에도 중졸, 고졸 검정고시 영어 교재를 구입해야 하고, 복사비와 볼펜과 공책 등 학용품값도 필요합니다.

In addition to Myung Ok, there are two other “mother students” named Young Mi and Hyun Ok. They wish to learn English as well. Not only is English important for passing the middle school and high school examination but it is also crucial to thriving in a rigorous university environment. English is important even for purchasing and using house-hold goods. There are currently five volunteer teachers teaching these students English. At the very least, we would like to provide them transportation expenses of 10,000 won. We believe it is necessary to use computers to help teach the students English speaking and listening as well as purchase English teaching material for the middle school and high school examination. Photocopiers, ballpoint pens, and notebooks are also needed.

 

영어를 알면 자존감도 높아지고 한국사회 적응도 빨라집니다

“If they know English, they can raise their self-esteem and adjust to South Korean society.”

명옥이를 비롯해 북한에서 온 엄마 학생들이 후원자 여러분들의 도움으로 영어를 좀 더 잘 배우게 된다면 이들의 영어 실력이 좀 더 빨리 향상되고, 중졸과 고졸 검정고시 합격도 빨라질 겁니다. 나아가 영어를 알면 자신감도 생기고 자존감도 향상되고, 한국사회에 더 잘 적응하게 될 것입니다. 같은 또래의 남한 청년들과는 이른바 영어 격차 (English divide)가 매우 큰데 그러한 격차도 점점 좁아질 것입니다. 이러한 변화의 주인공은 바로 후원자 여러분들이십니다!!

If “mother students” like Myung Ok can learn English with help and support, they can learn the language much faster and pass the examinations. Furthermore, if knowing English will raise their self esteem and help them adapt to South Korean society. Indeed, there is a big “English Divide” between young people in Korea. But with the proper education, Myung Ok and students like her may narrow this divide. The main instigators of change will be you!!

탈북청소년 대안학교 남북사랑학교의 학생 수가 늘어나면서 (재적 인원 43명) 교실이 모자라 학교가 보름 후에 이사갑니다. 현 위치에서 300미터 떨어진 곳으로 옮깁니다. 현재 남북사랑학교는 교실 부족으로 학교 앞 커피숍에서도 수업하고, 300미터 떨어진 교회 건물로 가서도 수업하는 불편을 겪고 있습니다. 현재의 학교 건물에는 식당 시설이 없어 점심도 역시 삼백 미터 떨어진 교회 건물에 가서 합니다.학교가 새로 이사를 가는 곳은 바로 날마다 점심을 먹으러 가고 교실이 모자랄 때면 가서 수업도 하는 교회 건물입니다. 교회 건물의 6층 (40평 규모)을 새로 얻어 교무실, 행정실, 교실을 꾸미고 기존에 학교 운영 법인 남북사랑네트워크와 교회가 함께 사용하는 2층도 리모델링을 전면적으로 시행하여 주중에 교실로 사용합니다. 

이렇게 이사를 하게 되면 교실은 많아지고 넓어지며 임대료는 줄어듭니다. 현재는 학교 건물의 두 개 층에 대한 임대료 (관리비 포함 월 206만원)를 내고 있는데 이사를 가면 한 개 층 (110만원)만 내도 되기 때문입니다

열아홉 살 하윤이는 탈북민의 딸입니다. 엄마가 북한 사람인 거죠. 하윤이한테는 동생 둘이 있습니다. 하윤이 엄마는 만성 허리통증으로 정기적으로 치료를 받습니다. 그래서 일을 못합니다. 하윤이가 다자녀 탈북민 가정의 소녀가장인 셈입니다. 하윤이는 아직도 고등학교를 졸업하지 못했습니다. 중국에서 자라다가 한국에 와서 검정고시로 중학교 졸업 학력을 얻고 이제 겨우 고등학교 1학년이 되었습니다. 고등학교를 졸업하면 인터넷 쇼핑몰을 차릴 겁니다. 하윤이는 한국어와 중국어 2개 언어를 구사할 수 있습니다. 한국과 중국에 물건을 팔아 수익금으로 집안 살림도 하고, 자신과 같은 중도입국 탈북민자녀 혹은 재중 탈북민 자녀를 돕는 게 꿈입니다. 하윤이의 꿈을 응원해 주세요.
