북한에서는 영어를 배우지 못했어요
“I could not learn English in North Korea”
명옥이는 북한의 량강도 혜산 출신입니다. 북한에서는 학교를 못 다녔습니다. 명목이가 열일곱 살이던 2008년부터는 북한에서도 학교에서 영어를 가르치기 시작했지만 명옥이는 학교를 다닌 적이 없기 때문에 북한에서는 영어를 배우지 못했습니다. 북한을 떠나 중국에 몇 해 사는 동안에도 고된 시집살이를 하느라 영어를 배울 겨를이 없었습니다. 다섯 살짜리 아들 하나를 둔 스물일곱 살 "엄마 학생" 명옥이는 2019년 4월 13일 (토) 치러진 검정고시에서 초졸 검정고시에 합격한 후 현재 탈북청소년 대안학교인 남북사랑학교에서 중졸 검정고시를 준비 중입니다. 명옥이가 제일 잘 배우고 싶은 과목은 영어입니다. 한국에서는 외래어를 너무 많이 사용하기 때문에 영어를 모르고는 살 수가 없기 때문입니다. 아르바이트를 하고 싶은 마음이 굴뚝같지만 명옥이는 공부에 집중하기 위해 오늘도 허리띠를 졸라맵니다.
Myung Ok is from North Korea's Ryanggang Province Hyesan. When she turned seventeen in 2008, North Korea began teaching English to its students in schools. Unfortunately, Myung Ok could not go to school in North Korea and didn’t learn any English. Even while she was living in China for some time she could not learn English because her Chinese in-laws made her work. A “mother student” with a five year old son, Myung Ok passed Korea’s primary school examination on April 13, 2019 and is now studying for the middle school examination at the South-North Love School, a school for North Korean defectors. Myung Ok is determined to learn English because there are many foreign words borrowed in the South Korean language. She wants to work part-time but is equally adamant about her studies.
명옥이를 가르치는 자원봉사자 선생님께 교통비라도 드리려면...
“For those interested in becoming a volunteer”
남북사랑학교에는 명옥이 외에도 영미, 현옥이 같은 엄마 학생들이 세 명이나 재학 중입니다. 이들의 한결같은 소원은 영어를 잘 배우는 겁니다. 중졸, 고졸 검정고시에 합격하기 위해서도 영어가 중요하고, 대학 들어가서 학업을 따라가기 위해서도 영어가 중요합니다. 온통 영어 투성이인 생활용품 하나를 제대로 사용하기 위해서도 영어를 모르고는 안 됩니다. 이들에게 영어를 가르치는 자원봉사 선생님들이 남북사랑학교에는 다섯 분이 계십니다. 이분들에게 한 달에 10만원씩 교통비라도 드리고 싶습니다. 그리고 영어 듣기와 말하기 교육을 위해서는 노트북 컴퓨터도 구입해야 합니다. 그밖에도 중졸, 고졸 검정고시 영어 교재를 구입해야 하고, 복사비와 볼펜과 공책 등 학용품값도 필요합니다.
In addition to Myung Ok, there are two other “mother students” named Young Mi and Hyun Ok. They wish to learn English as well. Not only is English important for passing the middle school and high school examination but it is also crucial to thriving in a rigorous university environment. English is important even for purchasing and using house-hold goods. There are currently five volunteer teachers teaching these students English. At the very least, we would like to provide them transportation expenses of 10,000 won. We believe it is necessary to use computers to help teach the students English speaking and listening as well as purchase English teaching material for the middle school and high school examination. Photocopiers, ballpoint pens, and notebooks are also needed.
영어를 알면 자존감도 높아지고 한국사회 적응도 빨라집니다
“If they know English, they can raise their self-esteem and adjust to South Korean society.”
명옥이를 비롯해 북한에서 온 엄마 학생들이 후원자 여러분들의 도움으로 영어를 좀 더 잘 배우게 된다면 이들의 영어 실력이 좀 더 빨리 향상되고, 중졸과 고졸 검정고시 합격도 빨라질 겁니다. 나아가 영어를 알면 자신감도 생기고 자존감도 향상되고, 한국사회에 더 잘 적응하게 될 것입니다. 같은 또래의 남한 청년들과는 이른바 영어 격차 (English divide)가 매우 큰데 그러한 격차도 점점 좁아질 것입니다. 이러한 변화의 주인공은 바로 후원자 여러분들이십니다!!
If “mother students” like Myung Ok can learn English with help and support, they can learn the language much faster and pass the examinations. Furthermore, if knowing English will raise their self esteem and help them adapt to South Korean society. Indeed, there is a big “English Divide” between young people in Korea. But with the proper education, Myung Ok and students like her may narrow this divide. The main instigators of change will be you!!
